Train like an Elite Athlete
The following 4 goals are from an elite swimmer that describes how to train at an elite level for the 2008 Olympics. I modified it so that it applies to basketball. I think if you apply these goals to your workouts/practice, it will improve your chances of becoming an elite athletic.
In most cases amateur athletes consider practice as boring routines that they will sometimes just go through the motions of completing the workout without thinking about it. It is important to know why you are working out "To Get Better".
- Be deliberate about every workout. (Focus on your workouts to improve a specific strength or weakness)
- Set a small goal for every workout. (Ex. Make 5 free throws in a row or dribble with weak hand)
- Be your own best competition. (Keep improving on your past performances, strive to get better daily)
- Work at a high intensity level for a few minutes in every practice. (Focus on intense defense without fouling, driving to the basket with the intent to score “You can’t stop me attitude”. Can do, be a force, “make it happen Captain” attitude.)
When you are on the court, play as hard as you can to win, but when the game is over, it's over! Proper attitude win or lose, respect your teammates and your opponents.
